Welcome to Class 5
Mrs MacDougall is the teacher. Our classroom assistants are Mrs Spedding and Mrs Stephenson
We cover the curriculum by splitting the work into topics. Autumn term is Stone Age to Iron Age, Spring term is Henry VIII and the break from Rome and in the Summer Term we look at why people visit the Mediterranean for their holidays. Science is taught throughout the year and topics include Magnetism, Light and Shadows and the Growth of plants and humans. The children do Literacy and Numeracy every morning and then Science, Geography, History, Music, R.E., French, P.E., Guided Reading, PSHCE and Art through the rest of the day.
P.E. – Wednesday afternoon. Children need their school P.E. kit to change in to, and we advise the children to leave them at school most of the time and only take them home to wash at the end of term.
Homework – Spellings will be given on a Monday and need to be learnt for Friday – they will be directly linked to work we do in class on spelling rules (e.g. how to add –ing to words, words that contain double letters.)
On a Friday children will take home two homework books. One is spelling and grammar, where possible linking and consolidating class learning. The other book is maths and gives lots of opportunity to practise basic skills at the appropriate level.
Reading – we encourage children to be more independent, so if there is a comment from home in their reading diary, or they have written one themselves they can change their book and take a new one home straight away. Their home reader may not be heard every week in school but other books linked to topics will be heard in guided reading groups.
