We are delighted to welcome your children from KS1 and hope that they have an enjoyable and fun-filled first year in KS2. Mrs MacDougall is the teacher in class 5 and Mrs Spedding and Mrs Birkett are the teaching assistants. Science, History and Geography are taught through topics. In the Autumn term we find out who first lived in Britain, Stone Age to Iron Age, and alongside this also study the formation of the earth, looking at rocks and finding out about extreme weather. In the Spring term we will be learning all about life in Ancient Egypt and in the Summer term we delve into Seaham’s coal mining past and find out more about the geography of Seaham and the UK. Science is taught throughout the year and topics include rocks, magnetism, light and shadows and the growth of plants and humans. The children do Literacy and Numeracy every morning and then Science, Geography, History, Music, R.E., Spanish, P.E., Whole Class Reading, PSHE and Art throughout the rest of the day.
P.E. – Monday afternoon. This term we are asking the children to come to school in their PE kit every Monday.
Homework – Spellings will be given on a Friday and need to be learnt for the following Friday – they will be directly linked to work we do in class on spelling rules. The children will be given lots of opportunities to practise their spellings in school but will benefit from additional practise at home. Homework will be set on a Friday and is usually some maths relating to that week’s work.
Reading – we encourage the children to be more independent in KS2, so if there is a comment from home in their reading diary (a signature is fine if there are no concerns) they can change their book and take a new one home straight away. There is no limit to the number of books your child can read and there will be small incentives awarded when they have read a certain number of books. Their home reader may not be heard every week in school but other books linked to topics will be read daily.
The staff in Class 5 work together to ensure that your children have a great time and make good progress throughout the year. Of course, learning is a journey best shared and we welcome you at any time if you have any concerns or suggestions regarding your child. You may contact us via the school office or by messaging on Seesaw.
Thank you and we look forward to working with you this year.
